On Wednesday’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert blasted Trump for walking back any claim he made condemning Nazis by defending the alt-right white supremacists who marched on Charlottesville over the weekend.
“You know it was the right thing to say because he hated saying it,” Colbert said of Trump’s speech Monday in which he spoke out against white supremacists. But the president turned that right around on Tuesday by defending the “good people” on “both sides” of the violence in Charlottesville.
“Donald Trump drove America’s moral leadership right through the guardrails by saying some of the people bearing torches with the Nazis were just good Joes,” Colbert said.
“Mr. President, there’s only one thing I no longer have any doubt about—you showed us who you were.”
According to members of his staff, Trump felt “liberated” after the wild speech.
“Liberated, free, emancipated,” Colbert suggested. “Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty I’m free at last,” he added. “You like that? Melania wrote it.”
