Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia earlier this year, and just this week, Trump told the New York Times that he thought it was “unfair” of Sessions to do that. On Thursday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took a “Closer Look” at Trump’s admission that he would not have chosen Sessions had he known he would have recused himself.
“This whole thing should be a cautionary tale for Republicans deciding whether or not to stand with Trump on issues like health care or Russia,” Seth said. “Because while Trump may demand loyalty for himself, he very rarely returns it.”
Trump said he would not have chosen Sessions as attorney general if he had known he would not have been involved with the Russia investigation. “How would he recuse himself before he got the job?” Meyers asked. “That would be like someone trying to get a construction job and saying their best skill is workers’ comp.”
In the interview, Trump also brought up the old “pee pee tape” dossier, and although that report has laid dormant for the past few months, one person has not let it go.
“Now if you don’t remember that dossier, I can’t tell you about it, because it’s unverified. And it doesn’t seem fair to sit here and list off unverified claims. But I can let Trump lapdog Sean Hannity tell you, because he can’t seem to stop talking about it.”
“Sean, are you mad about the rumors, or are you mad you weren’t invited?” Meyers asked the Fox News host. “Sorry, I shouldn’t say mad. Pissed?”
