Stephen Colbert began his monologue Wednesday night by reacting to news that a gunman had shot five people at a congressional baseball practice. The host of the Late Show, who is usually so hard on Washington’s leaders, praised Congress and President Trump for showing bipartisan support.
“I just want to say thank you to the congressional leadership and to the president for responding to this act of terror in a way that gives us hope that whatever our differences, we will always be the United States of America,” Colbert said. “Thank you for that.”
But with that, he moved back to his usual comedy and continued his recap of Attorney General Jeff Sessions‘ hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
During the hearing, Senator Kamala Harris pressed Sessions on his refusal to answer certain questions. The attorney general said she was making him “nervous” and a former Trump staffer said on CNN later that day that Harris was “hysterical.” John McCain even shut her down during her questioning.
“Yeah, come on Senator Harris,” Colbert remarked, “if you’d just give the guy a minute to take, I’m sure he could come up with a new reason why he can’t answer.” He then put on his Sessions accent to say, “I’ve got my anti-senator forcefield up and also, the floor is lava!”
“Jeff sessions doesn’t respond to being rushed. In fact, it’s the only kind of rushin’ he won’t engage with.”
