Last week, Seth Meyers laid into Paul Ryan over the Republican replacement for Obamacare. As a result, Ryan emailed Meyers to clarify parts of the bill he thought Seth mischaracterized. On Monday’s Late Night, Seth took a “Closer Look” at the bill and reacted to Ryan’s email on air.
“Unlike Republicans and their health care bill, we actually read the whole email,” Meyers joked.
Reading parts of the bill, Meyers said, “They took issue with our characterization of the bill as rushed, writing, ‘This bill has been online for a month, went through four House committees, and the only change this week was a simple three-page amendment.’ Which is misleading for a number of reasons.”
“For one thing,” Meyers remarked, “that three-page amendment is the reason a lot of Republicans changed their mind and voted for this bill, so you can’t claim it’s a small change. A lot can happen in three pages. That’s like saying, ‘I made you a cappuccino with hot water, sugar, espresso, and one other ingredient.’ You would say, ‘Well, what’s the other ingredient, Mr. Cosby?'”
Meyers ripped into a few more bits of the email, but before he was finished, he invited Ryan onto the show to personally discuss the bill with him. Let’s hope Ryan takes him up on the offer.
