Trevor Noah can not believe that some southern states still have a day to celebrate the Confederacy, and took them to task on Wednesday’s Daily Show for continuing the tradition. Confederate Memorial Day is still a state holiday in Mississippi and Alabama where federal offices will be closed this coming Monday.
“First of all, the Confederacy fought the Civil War to defend slavery,” Noah remarked. “Why would you honor that? Secondly, what are black people supposed to do on this holiday?” He suggested that they should watch BET all day in protest.
Speaking of protests, state workers tasked with taking down Confederate memorials have received threats from protesting white supremacists. “City officials are wearing full body armor because they’re afraid that radicals with extreme beliefs might kill them,” he said. “I wish there was a word to describe those kinds of people,” he added, noting that if they were brown they would be labeled “terrorists.”
But it the monuments must stay up, Noah suggested, “If it’s all part of your history, then maybe you should include all of the history. If you want to have the monument, then you should have to have a slave next to it ― for context!”
