‘Britain and America f**ked up’: John Oliver warns France not to elect xenophobic populist

On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver implored France not to follow in America and Britain’s footsteps by giving into xenophobic populism. Marine Le Pen is the far-right daughter of a Holocaust denier, and one of the frontrunners in France’s upcoming election.

“Honestly, she is the main reason you should be invested in this election,” Oliver said, showing a clip of Le Pen saying, “Would you accept 12 illegal immigrants moving into your flat?! You wouldn’t. On top of that, they start to remove the wallpaper! Some of them would steal your wallet and brutalize your wife…”

“Hold on: brutalizing your wife and stealing your wallet, again, that’s just boilerplate racism,” Oliver said. “But ‘people are coming to take my wallpaper’ is something a crazy person says. No one wants your wallpaper, you catastrophically weird person!”

Le Pen has momentum as her National Front party has won numerous seats lately. “One of the frustrating things about watching this unfold from America is this feels a little like déjà vu: a potentially destabilizing populist campaigning on anti-immigrant rhetoric who rages against the elites despite having a powerful father and inherited wealth.”

Oliver then attempted to reach the French people the only way he knows how—at the bistro. Watch the clip to see his address to France.
