Seth Meyers took a “Closer Look” on Wednesday’s Late Night at the New York Times‘ weekend article revealing Fox News and Bill O’Reilly settled three sexual assault cases for $13 million. President Trump, who often tweets support for the network, has come out in defense of O’Reilly.
Noting the relationship between Trump and Fox News, Meyers pointed out, “They give him glowing, unquestioning coverage, and in return he gives them unparalleled access,” he said, adding, “So Fox is basically the closest thing we have to state TV.”
In exchange for the president’s support, “O’Reilly has routinely defended Trump, even when Trump has done the indefensible,” Meyers noted. “And if it seemed outrageous to you at the time that O’Reilly would dismiss Trump’s apparent sexual assault confession as ‘crude guy talk,’ it might make a little more sense now,”
“This is the network that the president relies on for information. A network with an archaic culture of sexual harassment, fear, and intimidation that also serves, with a few exceptions, as his propaganda arm.”
