Seth Meyers looks at Trump’s attempts to overshadow Neil Gorsuch Supreme Court hearing

On Monday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look” at Trump’s recent tweets about the FBI and NSA as Congress conducts Neil Gorsuch’s hearings. With a Republican-lead Congress, there is very little chance Gorsuch will be denied a seat on the highest court, but Trump is still trying to overshadow the hearing, as he has done with most other confirmation hearings.

“Trump is apparently desperate for literally any good news these days,” so during a speech to the National Republican Congressional Committee Tuesday, Trump tried to sell Abraham Lincoln to the crowd, even saying a “lot of people don’t know” that Lincoln was Republican. “This can only mean one thing,” said Meyers. “Trump just found out Lincoln was a Republican.”

Meanwhile, some Republicans are asking Trump to apologize for his wiretapping claims, so they can move on from the investigation. CNN commentator Jeffrey Lord, however, believes Trump was just speaking “Americanese” and shouldn’t have been taken seriously. As Meyers points out, “Americanese: It’s a combination of ‘American’ and ‘Bitch, please.'”

The Russia scandal continues, too. Sean Spicer recently tried to distance the Trump campaign from its chairman Paul Manafort, who has been accused of having ties to Russia. Spicer said Manafort played a “limited role” in the campaign. “To be fair, I’m sure everyone involved in the Trump campaign played a limited role, ya know, kind of like Trump is doing now with the presidency.”
