On Thursday’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert continued his series of monologues devoted to the GOP’s new healthcare plan. The plan, which many are calling TrumpCare, has become extremely unpopular since it was announced this week.
Republicans are trying to push the bill through Congress and the House Ways and Means Committee spent 18 hours trying to pass it. “And anyone who has spent 18 hours trying to pass something knows what you get at the end,” remarked Colbert.
At one point during the 18 hour debate, Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri wondered aloud why we don’t tax ice cream and sunlight. “So, if you’re worried about losing your health care, do not worry,” Colbert said. “It’s safely in the hands of the guy who was up all night googling ‘Why don’t we tax the sun?'”
Trump has said that if TrumpCare does not pass, the Democrats should be blamed for stopping it. “Okay, hold on there, chief,” Colbert said. “You’re in charge now. If you let health care collapse, I don’t think we’ll blame the Democrats, we will blame you. That’s like a firefighter letting the house burn down to make the space heater look bad.”
