Alec Baldwin’s impression of President Trump has been one of the highlights of the last few months for many fans of political comedy. However, that form of satire may soon come to an end as Baldwin has said he is about ready to hang up the wig.
“Trump just overwhelmingly lacks any sportsmanship,” Baldwin said to Extra’s Mario Lopez. “He remains bitter, and angry, and you just want to look at him and go, ‘You won!’”
“His policies aside, which you can hate, I thought he would have just relaxed,” he continued. “The maliciousness of this White House has people worried… that’s why I’m not going to do it much longer, the impersonation, I don’t know how much more people can take it.”
Many people have suggested Baldwin take his impression to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but he has resisted the idea. “I don’t think it’s going to happen, I don’t think they want that, for their [prestige] and their integrity, I think a lot of people are thinking if Trump himself doesn’t come and face the music as it were… I don’t know what kind of program they’re going to have.”
No one expected Trump to win the election, so Baldwin was forced into a longer gig than he planned for. He will presumably step down from SNL at the end of this season. And while there’s no word yet on who will replace him, Leslie Jones is already preparing for the role.
