The Oscars were the big story of the weekend, so of course all the late nights hosts had to have their fun with the chaotic snafu that overshadowed Hollywood’s biggest night.
For the biggest award of the night, the accountant who holds the ballots offstage gave presenter Warren Beatty the wrong envelope, so in an error reminiscent of Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe mixup, Beatty and fellow announcer Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as Best Picture when it should have gone to Moonlight.
It was only after two minutes of speeches by La La Land producers that a stage manager ran onstage to correct the error. As Colbert said, “It should’ve been a great moment for African-Americans, but there’s always a catch. ‘Here’s your Oscar, but some white folks get to touch it first.’ To make matters worse, while they were up on stage, Ryan Gosling explained jazz to them.”
