On Monday’s Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon held a remote interview with newly appointed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos during his monologue. The Department of Education last week tweeted a tribute to W.E.B. Du Bois, but spelled it “W.E.B. DeBois,” then followed that up with a tweet that read, “Our deepest apologizes…” Twitter had a field day over the typos, placing special blame on Betsy DeVos, who took over the department, despite having no experience working as a teacher or with public schools.
Jimmy Fallon had “Betsy DeVos” on his show, played by comedian Jo Firestone as an incredibly dim version of the education secretary, to discuss the typos and the ensuing Twitter storm.
“A lot of people were screaming at me and making mad faces, so I prepared a formal apology,” she said, before reading from a piece of paper, “Betsy DeVos’s apology, by Betsy DeVos—Oh, that’s me!—We at the Department of Edu-Cash Cab are so sorry for any teepos, parentheses, look into camera and frown,” she read, before looking into camera and frowning.
“Our sincerest ‘I’m sorry’s go out to W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as W.E.B. Du Girls.”
