This week’s Saturday Night Live was the first since Donald Trump became president, and while Alec Baldwin’s cold open as Trump was solid, Melissa McCarthy stole the show (and perhaps the entire season) as a wild and crazy version of press secretary Sean Spicer that somehow seemed spot on. Dressed in an oversized suit and bald cap, McCarthy munched on wads of gum, spouted “alternative facts,” attacked reporters with the podium, and created what will surely go down as one of the all time great SNL sketches.
“Before we begin, I need you to know that myself and the press have gotten off to a rocky start,” McCarthy’s Spicer said. “When I say ‘rocky start,’ I mean it in the sense of the movie Rocky because I came out here to punch you.
“Now I’d like to begin today by apologizing on behalf of you to me for how you have treated me these last two weeks, and that apology is not accepted,” he added. “Because I’m not here to be your buddy. I’m here to swallow gum and I’m here to take names.”
The rest you have to see to believe, including the podium attack and a series of visual aids used to explain the “Moose-lamb” ban.
