Trevor Noah, like the other late night hosts, had a field day with Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech in which she called out Donald Trump. But Noah also touched on aspects of the speech that had little to do with Trump, including one bit that the Daily Show host deemed “tone-deaf.” Streep said that without Hollywood, Americans would only be watching football and mixed martial arts, which, she said, are not arts. “You don’t have to make your point by s—ting on someone else’s thing,” Noah said, “because a lot of people like football and the arts.”
Trevor went on to criticize Hollywood for celebrating itself for being progressive despite the fact that it continues to reinforce stereotypes. “In Hollywood Middle Easterners are almost always terrorists,” he pointed out. “Black people are gangsters and slaves. And it’s not like there aren’t other diverse stories to tell. I mean, just look at Hidden Fences…Even Hollywood dogs have more varied roles. If you only make stories that show people a certain way, there’s a good chance they will be perceived that way.”
