Seth Meyers gives somber response to Donald Trump’s election victory

"As a white man, I know that any emotions I'm feeling are likely a fraction of those being felt by the LGBTQ community, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Muslim Americans, and any number of the immigrant communities so vital to our country. Hopefully, the Trump administration and Trump supporters will be compassionate to them, because they need your compassion."

Seth Meyers gave a somber speech on Wednesday’s Late Night, reacting to Donald Trump’s election victory. Like many others in the wake of Clinton’s loss, Seth Meyers expressed his surprise and dismay at the prospect of a four-year Trump presidency. And while he managed to tell a few jokes and end on a hopeful note, Meyers broke down and choked back tears as he talked about his mother, who was really excited to witness the election of the first female president.

Clinton won’t be the first female president, “but that does mean that someone’s daughter is out there right now who will have that title,” Meyers said, his voice cracking. “We don’t know who you are, but I imagine that this moment will be a defining one for you. One that will make you work harder, and strive farther. And I hope I live to see your inauguration.”

Seth admitted, “As a white man, I know that any emotions I’m feeling are likely a fraction of those being felt by the LGBTQ community, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Muslim Americans, and any number of the immigrant communities so vital to our country.”

“Hopefully,” he said, “the Trump administration and Trump supporters will be compassionate to them, because they need your compassion.”
