South Park trolls Colin Kaepernick with ‘Cops are Pigs’ anthem in promo for Season 20

South Park trolled Colin Kaepernick in the promo for Season 20, which will premiere tonight, September 14th, at 10 p.m. EST. Kaepernick made headlines and newsfeeds last week when he refused to stand for the National Anthem ahead of the first game of the season for his San Francisco 49s.

Kaepernick kneeled during the “Star Spangled Banner” to protest injustice and the wrongful killing of unarmed African Americans. Many critics say he overstepped the bounds of his role as a football player, while others, including many veterans, supported his right to free speech.

In the 30-second promo for the latest South Park season, a group of men at a football stadium sing an updated version of America’s National Anthem, substituting the original lyrics for lines that mock Kaepernick.

“Colin Kaepernick is great
Cops are pigs, cops are pigs
Wait, someone just took my stuff, I need to call the cops
Oh no, I just said cops are pigs
Who’s gonna help me get my stuff?
Why did I listen to Colin Kaepernick
He’s not even any good
Oh, I just got all my stuff back
Cops are pigs again, cops are pigs
Colin Kaepernick’s a good backup.”

South Park has remained relevant for 20 years due to its ability to quickly churn out episodes about topical issues. Despite the lyrics in this promo, there’s no telling whether South Park supports or condemns Kaepernick’s actions. The animated show has never been one to take a side on an issue without mocking everyone involved.

Watch tonight on Comedy Central to see how the new season mocks the latest issues.
