Everyone in late night had to take the time Tuesday to mock Donald Trump for his latest bit of pandering. The Republican nominee is currently polling close to 0 percent with black voters in some states, so he visited a church in Detroit with Ben Carson this weekend to expand his outreach and the entire affair was fodder for late night ridicule.
Trevor Noah joked that Trump only had three choices to reach the black community. “He either goes to barber shops, Tyler Perry movies, or black churches. But he’s not gonna go to Tyler Perry movies, because, I mean, Madea’s a 2. He’s not gonna go to a barber shop, because they’d hook him up” with an orange fade, “and his only remaining option is church.”
Cameras caught Trump “swaying” to the music at Great Faith Ministries, but Noah can’t handle it. “No! I’m sorry, but I’ve got to call out the media on this one. Donald Trump was not ‘swaying to the music.’ He was swaying, and there happened to be music playing at the same time.”
At one point in the service, Trump was presented with a prayer cloth. “You guys put it on the shoulders?” Trevor said, mocking Trump. “My other friends put the white sheet over their head. But, I mean, to each their own, folks. We all do it differently.”
Trevor then handed the segment off to Roy Wood Jr. who had some thoughts on the church visit. “I feel bad for every member of that congregation,” Wood said. “Think about it: You go to church every Sunday, praying to God to keep Trump out of your life, only to show up one morning and see him in the pulpit. Trump is turning good church folk into atheists.”
