On Monday’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert mocked Ryan Lochte by sitting down to interview edited footage of the Olympic swimmer. Lochte became embroiled in a scandal last week after he and his teammates claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint in Rio, only to reveal later that they lied about the exchange. Lochte sat down with Matt Lauer for a primetime interview to explain his side, but Colbert had other uses for the footage.
Stephen asked Lochte what he has been doing since the scandal broke. “Well, since everything happened, I’ve kind of been laying low.” Stephen replied, “If you want to lay low, television is the best place to do that.”
When asked why he changed the story from vandalism to gunpoint, Lochte said, “That didn’t happen. I exaggerated that part.”
“That part? Okay, here’s the thing: That part is really the whole part,” Colbert said. “Without a gun cocked to your forehead, it’s really just a story about some guys urinating on a gas station. How could you get that so wrong?”
“I was intoxicated,” Lochte said.
This lead Stephen to ask a number of other questions, all with the same response: “I was intoxicated.”
“Describe for the audience the Ryan Lochte we can expect to see at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.” Lochte responded, “Intoxicated.”
