On Thursday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers recapped the last couple days of the Republican National Convention and took a “Closer Look” at Donald Trump’s speech accepting the nomination.
Late Night has been live all week, so after Trump’s speech on Day Four of the convention, Seth first had to recap Day Three, “because, let’s be honest, we’re still putting tonight’s jokes on cue cards.” He discussed Ted Cruz’s speech, in which he did no endorse Trump and was booed off the stage. “Is there anyone more comfortable with being hated than Ted Cruz?” Meyers asked. “He’s like an alcoholic who needs a drink first thing in the morning—He runs on boos.”
Meyers then moved on to Trump’s speech, and, more importantly, his weird entrance. “Would he arrive delivered by drone, or would he arrive wearing Ted Cruz’s pelt? Instead, he decided, with some inappropriate father-daughter touching.” Cue the clip of Trump patting Ivanka on her hips after she introduced him.
The main focus of the “Closer Look,” of course, was the content of Trump’s speech. And it was scary. “We are currently living in a dystopian nightmare,” Meyers said. “Trump talked about America like he was pitching a post-apocalyptic show to the Syfy network.”
