Jon Stewart tears into GOP and Fox News: ‘This country isn’t yours! You don’t own it!’

Jon Stewart took over Stephen Colbert’s desk on Thursday’s Late Show to rip into Fox News and the GOP after the final day of the Republican National Convention. Roger Ailes resigned as chairman of Fox News after being accused of sexual harassment, so Colbert had to bring on the man who spent almost two decades on The Daily Show fighting the conservative news network to give his two cents.

Stewart began with the RNC. “The Republicans appear to have a very clear plan for America. One, jail your political opponent. Two, inject Rudy Giuliani with a speedball-and-Red Bull enema, and, three, spend the rest of the time scaring the holy bejesus out of everybody.”

He then moved on to talk about the way Fox News and the GOP are already jumping through hoops to defend a man who has all the qualities they always projected on Barack Obama. “A ‘thin-skinned narcissist’ with ‘no government experience?’ Yes, that sounds exactly like Barack Obama.”

Stewart used Sean Hannity, or “Lumpy,” as an example of how Republicans are defending Trump for things they didn’t like about Obama, like that he was divisive, or that he used a teleprompter, or that he was an elite. Cue the clip of Hannity referring to Trump as a “blue-collar billionaire.”

“That’s not a thing,” Stewart said, adding, “Trump does seem like the kind of guy you’d like to sit down and own a fleet of airplanes with.”

Then Stewart brought back the impassioned fury he was known for to tear into the GOP. “Here’s where we are,” Stewart said. “Either Lumpy and friends are lying about being bothered by thin-skinned, authoritarian, less-than-Christian readers-of-prompter being president, or they don’t care, as long as it’s their thin-skinned prompter authoritarian tyrant narcissist.”

“You just want that person to give you your country back, because you feel that you are this country’s rightful owner. The only problem with that: this country isn’t yours. You don’t own it. It never was. There is no ‘real’ America. You don’t own it. You don’t own patriotism. You don’t own Christianity. You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police, and firefighters. Trust me!”

“I saw a lot of people on the convention floor in Cleveland with their ‘Blue Lives Matter’ rhetoric who either remained silent or actively fought against the 9/11 first responders’ bill reauthorization.”

“So I see you, and I see your bullshit.”
