On Monday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took a ‘Closer Look’ at Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. The conservative governor, “who looks like the teacher who volunteers to supervise detention.”
“Pence may not be well-known, but his anonymity and placid demeanor belie his history as a hardline conservative, and that’s exactly why Trump chose him,” Meyers said. “Pence has been among the most conservative politicians in this country for years.”
“As Pence put it in 2011, ‘I was Tea Party before it was cool,'” Meyers reported. “Say what you want about the Tea Party, but I’m pretty sure it’s still not cool. Last I checked, teens aren’t vaping in tri-cornered hats.”
Pence was Trump’s first choice according to Trump. And while Samantha Bee called “bulls—t” on that claim, Seth focused more on the team’s “60 Minutes” interview Sunday, in which Trump asserted his power over his running mate.
“At one point Trump even gave Pence permission to answer a question,” Meyers pointed out. “Trump treats Pence like someone taking their kid to a grown-up party for the first time—’Go ahead, you can answer. Show them all your big-boy words.'”
