On Thursday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look” at the certain disaster that will be the Republican National Convention next week in Cleveland. Donald Trump has gained very little support from the GOP establishment, and very few insiders are expected to show at the convention.
Politico contacted 50 “prominent Republicans” in June, and reported that “Few said they plan to attend the convention in Cleveland, let alone speak.”
The only noted Republican that will surely be in attendance is Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, whom Trump tapped for vice president. But “Trump doesn’t care about boring politicians,” Meyers said. “He wants celebrities.”
Trump tried to get supporters Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger to attend, but could only get Tim Tebow. Meyers joked that Trump “is like a guy who slept through his fantasy football draft, so his buddies picked his roster.”
Meyers pointed out that Trump may also have some problems with the Republican party platform. The GOP announced this week that the platform will declare pornography a public health crisis, despite the fact that their party’s nominee has been on the cover of Playboy.
“So the platform is a mess, no one wants to go, a large number of delegates don’t back Trump, and there are gonna be massive protests.” Meyers concluded. “How can this looming disaster get any worse?”
Guns, of course. Ohio is an open carry state, so Trump supporters will be able to bring their rifles to the convention.
“This way people don’t have to cheer during Trump’s speech,” Meyers said. “They can just shoot ’em into the air like Yosemite Sam.”
