Paul Ryan appeared on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Tuesday night to announce that he would definitely not be running for president, right? Or was there a maybe thrown in there? As Donald Trump continues to rise in the delegate count, Republicans are looking for a way to stop him with a contested convention and clean slate opportunity to nominate someone else. “The hot name on a lot of Republican lips right now is Speaker of the House Paul Ryan,” Colbert says in the clip. “They believe he would be a better alternative to Trump and Cruz, more likely to attract moderate voters and less likely to haunt your Robitussin-induced nightmares.”

For more on the issue, Colbert goes live via satellite to “Late Show Speaker Paul Ryan expert Speaker Paul Ryan,” who has to tell Stephen again and again that he will not accept the nomination. “Let me say it in clear English: no!” insists Ryan. But Colbert needs to hear it in German and Russian as well. “Wow, you seem to know a lot of foreign languages,” Colbert says. “That kind of international experience will really come in handy if you decide to accept the Republican nomination, sir.”
