John Oliver exposes the real Donald Trump in an effort to ‘Make Donald Drumpf Again’

John Oliver forced himself to talk about the inevitable Donald Trump on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight. “Our main story tonight — and I can’t even believe I’m saying this — is Donald Trump.” Oliver has deliberately chosen to ignore Trump for months, because the Republican frontrunner has been given enough news coverage, but “at this point, Donald Trump is America’s back mole — it may have seemed harmless a year ago, but now that it has gotten frighteningly bigger, it is no longer wise to ignore it.”

Despite Trump’s obvious appeal, and even the humor he’s brought to the race that Oliver can’t help but enjoy, John knows that if you dig a little deeper into Trump’s claims, you’ll find the appeal doesn’t hold. And dig he does, into supporters’ claims that Trump tells it like it is (False), that he’s independent and self-financed (False), that he’s tough (basically False), and his biggest selling point, his success (Not as true as it seems). “Trump’s lack of sound financial instincts is perhaps best exemplified by the business he put his name on back in 2006, just before the entire housing market collapsed,” which was Trump Mortgage. “Starting a mortgage company in 2006 was one of the worst decisions you could possibly make.”

Despite Oliver’s ten minute analysis, Trump will not fall anytime soon. “Even when you can demonstrably prove Trump to be wrong, it somehow never seems to matter,” Oliver says. “You can hold his feet to the fire, but he’ll just stand there on the stumps, bragging about his fireproof foot skin.” This is because, over the years, Trump has made his own name synonymous with success. So what do you do to tear down his success? Get rid of his name. Oliver found a biography that traces Trump’s family name back to Drumpf, and Oliver will not let it go. Determined to take away Trump’s name power, Last Week Tonight started the hashtag #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain, created a Chrome extension that will change Trump to Drumpf in your browser, and built, where you can buy a hat and support the cause to “Make Donald Drumpf Again.”
