On Monday’s Full Frontal, Samantha Bee called out Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich, who has been claiming to be the moderate Republican in the race. Bee admits, “in the nauseating bus terminal restroom that is the Republican Party, John Kasich initially seems like the least disgusting stall.” But his claim to be moderate is unfounded, making him just another politician spinning his own narrative.
Kasich said in the first Republican debate that he believes in traditional marriage, but accepts that same sex marriage is not the law of the land. However, Overgefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court that legalized same sex marriage, was originally called Obergefell v. Kasich, named for the Ohio governor who wouldn’t recognize the marriage of two out of state men, one of whom was terminally ill.
He is also fiercely pro-life. Bee points out that if you live outside Ohio, you don’t hear about his anti-choice record because he hides restrictions in larger budget bills, “kind of like a desperate pregnant teenager buying ever larger sweat shirts.” He also claims to support the exceptions of rape, incest, and the life of the mother, but his abortion laws have made no such exceptions. It may be time for a new moniker, Moderate in Name Only.
