On Tuesday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look” at the most recent Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina. Many thought Bernie Sanders won the debate, and this during a dead heat in New Hampshire polls. For months, Hillary Clinton dominated the race, but young voters have been flying to Sanders, causing many to speculate that this will be like 2008 all over again for Clinton, who lead early, but lost when Barack Obama gained considerable steam. Of course, there are some differences between this race and that one, but the polling is clear—Democrats love Sanders. Hillary Clinton says she is not worried about the polls because after one reported her down, the next reported that she was up six points, so she doesn’t pay attention to polls. “You can’t say, ‘I don’t pay any attention to polls,’ right after citing a poll,” declares Seth, but it is too soon to tell how this race will play out. The most important thing to note here, though, is that nobody saw this coming from Bernie, because nobody expected him to be so popular with young people. But Bernie’s simple lifestyle speaks to young people, as he wears old suits and flies coach. As Seth points out, “Bernie sanders is so frugal that if he’s elected president, he might travel on Bus Force One.” Young people can get on board with that.
