On Monday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look” at the most recent Iran hostage affairs. Over the weekend, Iran released four American prisoners in exchange for seven Iranian prisoners, none of whom had been charged with violent crimes or terrorism. But “if you thought this would be an occasion for bipartisan celebration, you’d be wrong.” Republicans have been criticizing President Obama for months for not doing anything, with Jeb Bush calling it appalling to see “no effort” done. “And Jeb knows no effort when he see it, because that’s his campaign strategy.” After 14 months of secret diplomacy, the four prisoners were released, but Republicans are outraged over the seven swapped prisoners. Donald Trump has been vocal, as always, against Obama, but he also somehow wants credit for the deal because he’s been talking about it. When asked if he will give credit to Obama for doing what he himself said would never happen, Trump said no, then denied ever saying it would never happen. Cue the clip of him saying it would never happen. “Another contradiction from America’s favorite contra-dickhead,” quips Seth, before moving on to the issue of the American sailors held captive by Iran for less than a day before being released. “So, the Obama administration basically Amazon Primed home ten sailors without giving up anything.” Will Republicans give him credit for this? Watch to see. No spoilers.
