On Monday’s Late Night, Seth Meyers took a closer look at the arrest of “El Chapo” and news that he gave a secret interview to Sean Penn. Notorious drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is known as much for his role in Mexican drug wars as creative ways of getting free. He escaped in a laundry basket, and again through an underground tunnel. “He bursts out of jail the way other people wear khakis on a Friday,” says Seth of the casual escapes. The guards even ignored hammering and clanging coming from his cell. But Seth reminds us, “before you judge anyone for ignoring Mexican clanging, ask yourself what you did the last time a mariachi band played on your subway.” After the arrest, news surfaced that Sean Penn had interviewed “El Chapo” in his hideout months ago, and the interview lead to the drug lord’s eventual arrest. Seth is amazed that an actor could get access to such a high profile drug kingpin. “The world hasn’t seen anything like this since Ellen Pompeo’s 2011 interview of Osama bin Laden for Cosmo titled, ‘Zero Dark Thirty Sex Moves He Wishes You’d Secretly Try.'” Watch the clip to see what impressed Seth the most about the story.
